Hi. My boat has a 2006 Mercruiser 3.0L TKS w/Alpha 1 stern drive. I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with...recently, I replaced the thermostat housing/thermostat due to leaky gasket and rust issues. I re-installed the temp sender, the temp alarm, and TKS sending unit from the old housing. I went out for a test run and everything was running great for the first few minutes then a pretty loud alarm sound started somewhere in the engine bay. I know that I have alarm sensors for the gear lube, oil and temp, but all levels are good. The engine is running between 160 and 170 degrees at all times. No alarm is sounding from the cockpit area. I am wondering if anyone knows a few things:

1. Is there a way to test the alarm sensors to see if one is malfunctioning (ohms, etc.)
2. If I disconnect the wires from all sensors, would that make alarm stop so that I can reconnect them one at a time to see which one is bad?
3. Is there an alarm in/around engine or am I hearing something else????
4. If there is a way to test the sensors, does anyone know what I should look for?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Jay G.

Hi Bt Doctur...I sent you a message accidentally because I am new at this and didn't know how to reply to your post...I apologize. Do you have any idea what this noise could be...it does not change with RPM's and starts about 10 seconds after the engine starts....

Hi there, welcome to iboats!:) Normally the warning horn speaker is mounted under the dash. Being a 3.0L engine, it's a 50/50 gamble if you have the warning horn system from new due to it's an option for the 3.0's. All other engine come standard with the warning horn. If someone installed the horn aftermarket, it's possible they could have mounted the horn next to the engine. But it's more convenient to mount it under the dash as the wiring is usually already there for it.

Unplugging one wire at a time may stop the horn indicating that is the problem area. Dose your gear oil reservoir have two wire plugged into it?, If so unplug them both as a test.

Some boats have a warning system for other things such a high water bilge pump alert.

Thank you for your replies...I finally figured out where the noise was coming from....it was the CARBURETOR GASKET!!! Apparently, the gasket had deteriorated on one side. I replaced the gasket and poof...sound gone....that was a new one for me!

Interesting! Was the sound more like a whistle sound? Thanks for letting us know.:)
