Pre-Alpha Reverse Issues

I have a pre-alpha drive (84 Chris Craft) that I’m having issues with it going into reverse. If I remove the cable from the side of the engine it still will not go in reverse. If I go down to drive I can get it to go in reverse, but takes quite a bit of effort. Checked adjustment and slop on cable and it checks out ok.
The only work that has been done recently is a different shifter, but don’t think that’s the issue.
I’m not sure of next step I don’t have one of those degree tools to check it with. Should I just change the cable?

Thanx :)

Is your shift interrupter working?
When was the last time the gear lube was changed, and did it look ok?
You may just need a lower shift cable, they wear out but usually they can be shifted by hand when not connected

Is the shift interrupter the thing that causes the engine to stall? As ar as the gear lube it was changed last year and looked ok.

So pulled the drive today and saw some play in the cable. Going to put a new one in, is there a write up anywhere on how to do it?

Think all I need is the measurement down at the drive, when pulling the cable thru

New (OEM) cables are 'pre-cut' to the correct length. Do not follow the MC-1 manual instruction regarding measuring and cutting the core wire... Better use the later manual, for the R, MR, Alpha One drives. BTW, any drive that was made before the Alpha One is a 'pre-Alpha', that is a list of no less than 16 different drives.... Better to call yours what it is, less the confusion. ;)

Ok so I need more help!!!!!

Put the new lower shift cable in and shifting with the cable disconnected is fine now, both forward and reverse work fine. :)

As soon as I hook up the shifter cable from the control box it does not work. As soon as I go into forward it's like the cable is not traveling enough. If I go past forward a bit it will work, same for reverse.

I tried my old control box and a different shift cable and same thing.

I adjusted both cables as described by chris in the youtube video and still no worky.

Thanx :)
