Bought two Everstart group 27 last month to swap out with my new ipilot. Launched the boat today and the starter battery would not turn it over. I could have started it up with the troller but after 7 seasons I thought it was time to see if I could turn a 40 hp outboard by a rope start. Started on the first pull.
I cruised for about 20 miles and the alternator charged up the starter battery. This was a Walmart Everstart (Walmarts batteries are currently made by Johnson Controls). So my last Everstart combo troller/starter I thought was only 2 years old, but It was actually march of 2011 so I can't complain getting over 3 years for like $74.
I bought the combo one last time since I tend to run it down using the stereo while hanging out in a bay. This time I went with the $99 deep cycle troller Everstart Max for $99. Their Max designation means 2 year warranty where the other are only 1 year. Hopefully, a deep cycle has beefier plates. I did not see another combo in stock anyway.
The troller model showed 690 cranking amps where my old one was only 675. Just like with tires where we used to get like 40,000 miles off a set, now they have changed the rubber composition to last only 24.000 and go up in price each time. A set of 4 michelins used to cost me $400 now they cost me $600 and only give me 1/2 the mileage.
So now its the same for batteries. I take care of them properly and used to get 5 years off one. Now I only get 3 years.
