I lost all spark. Replaced coil and control module in distributor and got spark back but I lost the wiring on the distributor cap. I have the firing order and i think i am checking for top dead center correctly but it wont even try to start. If anyone can tell me how to get this wired correctly i would really appreciate it. I may have some other problem but until i know the distributor is correct im stuck. Thanks from a newbie.

What do you mean you lost wiring on distributor? Did you take all the wires off?

Ifit's a Chevy engine, No problem, take off the distributor cap, then pull out the spark plugs, and crank the engine over (by hand preferably), as you feel with your finger for compression pressure on Cyl #1, and line up the timing marks on the crank pulley, and engine mark, this is TDC (top dead center). If no compression pressure? Crank the engine over one more turn to TDC again, while checking again for compression, if so this should be Cyl #1. Then look where your rotor is, if the Dizzy wasn't removed it should be facing Cyl #1 on the Cap, then just put the rest of your wires on, clockwise from #1.

Firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, Port side 1-3-5-7, Starboard side 2-4-6-8.

When i have timing marks lined up standing at the belts waterpump etc the rotor is pointed at the back right cylinder i did not check to see if i was on compression stroke. Diagram from owners manual says that can only be # 2 or # 7. I assumed 7 as that would make # 1 1st on right side [chevy 350]. I wired it both ways with no luck. I also have decent blue spark with plugs out. it seems to be orange under compression. Still scratching my head.

Thanks WIMUSKY i agree. That is how i have it wired but the rotor is pointed at # 7 at TDC. Did i jump time or did volvo change something to drive me crazy. Dizzy has not been out. I had intermitant problem starting twice before i lost all spark. It ran fine when i shut it off then went to no spark the next time i tried to start it. I will check TDC again in am. This thing will barely pop and it seems like it should turn over a little faster. B O A T = Break Out Another Thousand

The Chevy small block fires alternately on #1, and #6, they are both at TDC the same time, one is on compression, one is on exhaust, not Cyl #7! You must crank the engine over one turn to be on #1! If the rotor don't line up exactly then, just loosen the distributor a little, and move the whole Dizzy to suit, and then snug it down, and try it. To refresh, when the crank is on TDC, that means the crank is at TDC for either #1, or #6, turn the crank to this while feeling for compression. to determine which one? If you had the Dizzy out completely, take it out again, and drop it in with the rotor facing #1 if need be. If you didn't have the Dizzy out, then you should be able to just loosen up the Dizzy, and move it close enough to be in time.

If you look closely at the firing order, one revolution 1-8-4-3 next revolution 6-5-7-2,

I finally got the time to get back in that boat today. MikDee got me on track for TDC and im running again. I was on the the exhaust stroke not compression. Thanks for the help. I went out for a test drive and it went ok. My next problem is that i ran for around twenty minutes and it died. This has happened 3 or 4 times before i lost all spark. I may need to start another thread but i will describe anyway, It is just like it runs out of gas. I let it sit for a few and it will start again I did rap the fuel pump a couple times. It dies when running at 3 plus rpms not idling. Has anyone had an electronic fuel pump that was intermittent. My experience with automotive fuel pumps is you may get them to work once but after that they are done. Im leaning toward just replacing it. Thanks for all the help hopefully i will have an answer for someones question on this forum someday. Iwill be looking.

Yes, I have had intermittent fuel pump problems myself. Although, mine where usually when starting. My started as the usual whine then seemed to get progressively louder and hotter to the touch. I replaced the fuel pump and all is has been well.

"You mentioned you lost all spark"? Is your coil breaking down when hot?

I think im alright on the spark. When it dies it will try to fire. I pulled the fuel line and pump was not working. Waited a few and it starts right up. Bad fuel pump or relay ? I dont know what would tell the fuel pump to shut off if anything.

Your fuel pump only operates when the engine is running already or while cranking.
