Is a Johnson 85 hp 85ESL69L the same as the Evenrude 85 HP same year

Both of these look the same in a picture 4 clyinders
I have the evenrude and having trouble getting it to run , found Johnson on CL and though maybe with the 2 could get a running motor for my pontoon project

Same motors except for paint colour and cowlings.-------------Control box on one was a push button and the other is a single lever.

what should the compression be , guy says it has 100 per cylinder
Also says it needs a water pump , isn't that just the impeller that should be changed every couple of years

Ok going to look at this motor in the morning tomorrow , a long drive so I want to make sure of things to do
Will do compression test with my tools what should it read to be good I know about equal on all 4 cly
anyother tests I should do ? will try to test forward and reverse gears I assume I can do that on a muff

I like to see 120psi on those, but gauges can vary and if it hasn't been run in a while or been decarbed, that will give artificially low(er) numbers.

Check for burnt / blistered paint on the heads and block. Just thinking that an overheat may be why he knows it needs a waterpump.

well i pulled the trigger and bought it , did not have any water comming from the 2 holes below the power unit
but it did run and shift forward and reverse
Now will put this on stand , clean it up try and replace impeller , clean carbs , do the decarb trick and see what happens

Is there any tricks for changing the impeller ? I have done a Mercury once but it had gear shift the Johnson says electric
Does this mean there is a wire I have to disconnect some where ? I have looked for the kit and prices are all over the place
Do you normally replace impeller , cup , plate , gaskets and o rings or just the impeller ? When we ran it for a few sec with muff on I felt air from the p holes no water
What other things do I need to do to this before I mount it to the pontoon , or is it easier to do this work after I mount it up ?
