Sea Ray dealer says I need a new ECM for 5.0 MPI

I was just told by the Sea Ray dealer that I need a new ECM for my 5.0 MPI Bravo 3 at the tune of $1,950.00. According to them they had to bring in a mercruiser rep to look at my boat. The boat shut down while we were cruising in the lake. No spark out the coil. The rep replaced the ECM with a new one he had and the boat ran. My question is there some where I can send my ECM to be repaired or purchase one cheaper than the $1,950.00 they quoted me. Thanks guys

Hi there, Do you have your engine serial number handy? What year?

What is thought to be wrong with your old one?

Depending on ECM type and problem, there might be a repair facility to ask.

Yea, pricing for ECM's is a rip-off. List price on those things is over $2K.

If you Google ECM repair, you will find some places that repair them. Automotive for the most part, so you would have to see if they also do marine engine versions.

It's a 2003 engine serial number OM653566. I did a google search on it but found repair shops for automotive. I figured I would check here before I started calling these shops

Think it's the ECM 555 model. We didn't say other than the rep put a new one on and the engine ran

If you were going to fix this yourself, then you could probably find a lower cost approach (eBay, ECM repair company, GM parts, etc). But through the dealer or repair shop, it is costly.

The ECM part number your looking for is 864376T05 which has now superseded to 864376T06. Also, there should be another part number on the ECM itself and it may be different then the two numbers I just posted. Be sure to search both online and on ebay using all the part numbers to help find the best deal for you.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...cal+Components

http://www.psepmarineparts.biz/store...cm_modules.htm

Your complete parts catalog, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selec...doc_nbr=884717

There are two marine repair facilities you could try contacting to see if they can help, both are in California.

First try http://whipplesuperchargers.com/inde...&product_id=73

Then http://www.simonmotorsports.com/ecu/optiecu.htm

OK I'll ask, Merc's website shows the part numbers I list above, where did yours come from and why is Merc on site in error?

So, do you just tell the dealer to take back the new ECM and give you back your old one? I would make sure to get it back, since it could be repaired and kept as a spare or sold on eBay, etc.

AllDodge, I came up with slightly different part numbers for the ECM as well, using mercruiserparts web site. there was a serial number cut-off in the notes and the OP's engine was below that cut-off.

This thread has prompted me to do a little investigation into the control module on my engines (plural). Looks like I have the MEFI-1 variety . . . Having one of those fail would be a real budget killer. I notice that automotive varieties of the control modules are about 1/2 the cost of their marine equivalents

The dealer exact words to me was they couldn't get spark out the coil either (I replaced everything the book said to do. I thought they would scan it which I guess they didn't here is why. He went on to tell me they called in a mercruiser rep and he had another ECM on his truck and changed them out and the boat cranked right up like it should. He then reinstalled my original ECM and the boat wouldn't start. And that's where they came up with I need a ECM. I didn't buy it from them just paid them to tell me what was wrong with it. Since I thought it might be the ECM I wanted be sure.

What has me a little scared is the fact the dealer could not tell me what caused the ECM to go out

Bravo402's serial number starts with 0M, the serial numbers shown above are for the 0W and above, his engine model would need the 0W and below.;)

Also in post #8, he mentions his is standard cooling which coincides with looking up his serial number as standard cooling and not closed cooling that could have been added later. If he didn't mention standard cooling, we would have had to ask him if he had standard or closed cooling to confirm the correct part number.

First run the serial number to confirm their engine model and parts catalog part number, then go to the website I linked above for both the most latest part numbers and the original part numbers. The Merc website were you punch in the serial number only shows the original parts numbers, it does not show or keep up with the superseded numbers. You'd have to pull them numbers and run them in another area to get the latest numbers or go directly to the other site after confirming what the OP really has.

The best place I have found on the internet that keeps up with the latest parts info as Mercruiser changes them near daily it seems is here.http://www.mercruiserparts.com/partsByNumber.asp

If yours goes out, then this place might be able to help. http://www.mefiburn.com/ and maybe here, but I'm not sure of it. http://www.technicalservicesin.com/index.php?page=ecm

Also lots of reading here for the MEFI system, http://www.michaelstractors.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=199

Looks like these many of these ECM's are made in at the AC-Delco, now Delphi Automotive Systems plant in Kokomo, Indiana . . .

I spent a day at their plant way back in the 1980's during my Industrial Engineering days . . . The company that I was with at the time supplied many of the digital dashboard display components for GM cars.
