Shift interrupt wires

Hi, just finishing up the wiring on my motor install. It's a Carb'd Mercruiser 5.7. I have two remaining wires on the shifter assembly. (Shift interrupt switch I believe). They are black and white. I can't figure out where they go as there are no other stray wires hanging around.

I'm also getting clicking from the Slave Solenoid which is probably caused by these wires not being grounded.

Engine serial number or year please

Merc does not use white other then as base timing connections on a distributer. The Black is a ground, now if the white is Wht/Grn then it is for the interrupter. If it is Tan then it goes to the water temp sender. Wires that go to the interrupter switch are White/Green and Black, or White/Green and Purple. If they are for the switch then they would not keep you from starting. Check that you have a connection from the slave to starter with Yel/Red. Also need a connection of Red/Pur on the other side of the slave. The Red/Pur should be hot, and you should see 12V on the Yel/Red when the solenoid engages.

I am sure of the wiring colors -- it may vary by year model but i can tell you 1 wire would come from your coil at the Tach connection and go to the switch. The other side would be grounded. A connection is made through the switch when its depressed and it cuts the engine spark to allow gears in the outdrive to disengage when shifting out of gear.

Regarding your clicking on your slave solenoid -- Are you referring to the starter motor bendix ? If so that sounds more like a low battery or bad battery connection to the starter or starter issue than a shift interupt issue.

These are 3 wires sitting on top of the starboard valve cover still unknown where they connect.

Wires coming off the Distributor (White with green stripe and white with red stripe) The white with green stripe has a female connector tapped in that isn't plugged into anything right now.

These are the two coming off the shift switch (green/white and black)

The Solenoid and the breaker switch still aren't mounted so that's whats most likely causing the clicking since its not grounded. I don't know where to mount this? The clicking is coming from this solenoid. If I jump the starter it will crank slowly but the battery is old and won't charge to full capacity so that is an option too.

my middle pic show 2 connectors, a black and a green/white
your pic with the purple wire, the black with a ring connector I`m guessing is for the electric choke element

I have everything grounded up and I'm still getting the clicking from the slave solenoid when I go to start. I've also double checked all the wiring and connections with the wiring diagrams between the solenoid, alternator and starter.

I also jumped the 2 terminals on the slave with some wire with someone turning the key and it still clicks.

the slave sends power to the starter solenoid. so applying power to the large yellow w/ red stripe will cause the starter to spin. the large red with the purple stripe should have 12v on it . the heavy yellow with the red stripe goes to the small lug closest to the engine block on the starter solenoid.try jumping the small lug to 12v . starter should spin.
