we need to replace the filter but no marina in Bracebridge area has it or Canadian tire
From my understanding its pretty much a car engine so what would be a suitable replacement for a
140HP I/O board Mercruiser 4 cylinder engine from a GREW boat about mid 80's vintage

Also need a new coil for this if anyone can help with that vacation starts friday and we sank the back end of the boat.
Did two oil changes (another question there has to be cheaper oil than the quicksilver stuff) and sprayed oil in to cylinders after removing water\She turns over fine but wont fire and there does not appear to be any spark from the coil to the distributor cap

let me know please

First time doing the boat thing

Thanks

I used to use the Napa filters. They have a lookup at the store. Have you checked voltage at the coil? Diagnose don't just replace. Keep in mind you will probably need a starter soon and that is where the voltage for the coil comes from.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... The filter is the standard Chevy filter,.... same as a 350,...

I doubt yer coil is bad, as it's the Points in the distributor that fires the coil,.....
They probably need changin',...

well we sank the back end of the boat which submerged the engine
a shame since we had just put a brand new starter on it a few weeks back
we drained the oil and filled twice getting all water out and pulled the distributor cap off and dried and sprayed with WD40 and it still did not want to fire
I pulled a plug and laid it next to the motor loking for spark and could see or feel anything when i grabbed the wire during cranking. we then grabbed the wire from coil to distributor and no shock there either
then engine still cranks extremely well it just wont fire or attempt. Fule could be an issue but we should have spark before looking at fuel

again any help is much appreciated as I need to try and figure this out
I did search the site and found a pontiac fire chicken 89 fliter would work
but oil just any plain 25/40 should work right?

thanks and will keeping checking this thread to try and get the boat running for this weekend

Simply spraying WD40 in the distributor is not going to help. You need to clean or replace the points. Now that you've sprayed it with WD40, go to the store and buy some electrical cleaner spray - or even brake cleaner spray. The inside of the distributor needs to be clean and dry, with the points especially clean.

I'm running rotella T in my boat, and have used many Wix filters in my boats over the years. As many pointed out, you have to change the points and condenser.

thanks for the help I cleaned it up and replaced the coil and she ran for about 4 minutes before all hell broke loose
Water seems to be getting pumped in to the engine from the cooling system... I posted the details in a new thread but I really hope that doesn't mean we are screwed and have to replace the engine.. as I stated a hydro lock happened and also the boat sank while the stern drive was down..

Typical she ran better than she had ever run before until white crap came shooting out of the top of the carb and out the exhaust at the stern drive
Ugh and its not even my boat Wahhhh
