Hi,
I need some help before I blow my self out of the water. My boat had no alternator so I went and got one. it is internally regulated.
I hooked the orange wire to the batt terminal, the black wire to the ground and the other two (Purple and red) to the plug in connector that came with the alternator.

on the alternator it says "R and F" I hooked the red wire to R and the purple to F.

It started up and ran at just under 14 volts...I whooped for joy! then I tried to turn it off... it stayed running... had to pull the red and purple wires out of the alternator to turn off the engine. I read the F terminal is supposed to light the idiot light. I wonder if I just leave the purple wire disconnected if that will solve the problem... HELP!

You have a picture of the back of your alternator?

The purple wire should be the one going to your ignition switch and is also the one that goes to your ignition system. Somehow, when you turn off the ignition, that connection of the alternator stays energized thus keeping your ignition powered.
