Hi all, I have a 1957 35 hp seahorse Johnson outboard and I have no spark. All the points condensers, all that stuff is brand new. Plug wires, and plugs also new. I don't am stuck on why it won't get spark. the wiring is very strange on it, and jumbled up. I would try to rewire it all, but dont know where to put the wires. Im thinking its missing some of the electrical components. The cut off switch Im not sure if thats wired right either. If thats not wired right will it cut off the spark? I have included some pictures of my engine.
Any help is appreciated Thanks.

Just because it is not wired correctly would not say for sure that it would cut off the spark, but it certainly could.

The vacuum cut-out switch cannot do ANYTHING unless there is a vacuum present. And there cannot be any vacuum present unless it is running. So get that out of your mind.

I don't care if they are new.....clean those points!! There seems to be a rash of new points out there that have a invisible non-conductive substance on the contacts. You can also test them with a multimeter. Use the lowest ohms setting and check the resistance across them. Should be around an ohm when open and zero ohms when closed. Note, I said ZERO, not almost zero. Disconnect the wires and retest if your meter doesn't show expected results (some won't). Once cleaned off, they work fine.

EDIT: With wires disconnected, the points should show zero when closed, infinity when open.

Thanks

One lead on the points where the wires attach. Other lead to the mag plate. For this particular test it doesn't make any difference which is which. But just so you get used to the custom, put the black one to "ground" (the mag plate).

Ok so I did the test, and got 0.8. It didnt matter if the points were open, or closed, i always got 0.8. And when I took the wires off the points, i got 0.

Ok i just did another spark test with a spark tester, and i stuck my finger on the tester while the engine was being pulled over, and i got shocked. There is enough spark to shock me, but not enough spark to see.

0 or infinity???
Anyhow, as I said, you should have gotten about an ohm with them open (wires attached) and you did. But you should have gotten zero with them closed and you did not.
So clean the points already. They aren't making contact.

Ok any suggestions for what to give the points a real good cleaning with? Maybe a fine grit sandpaper?

alright i figured it out. It had to do with getting them to open, and close at the right times. Thanks for all of your help
