Replace the reeds with the carbon fiber reeds and now it leaks gas when throttled from cars and sneezes on ocassion through carbs at idle, anyone know what would cause this, i read I may have over tighten them, the reed blocks are aluminum and clean as a whistle, did not use a torque wrrench because I can not find the specs in the shop manual.

What brand did you use? Did you sand the reed blocks? New reed block gaskets?

An occasional miss at idle could also be a "lean sneeze." This is a carb issue. Restricted idle passages inside the upper carb body can cause an occasional miss at idle. That could be the problem instead of a reed issue.

Mageallan Marine Inc. Performance Reeds
High Grade Carbon Fiber
Dual Surface Reed Design
Fits Evinrude Johnson Outboards
65 - 140 hp. 4 cylinder & V4 Motors
Replaces Reed Part # 0317739 or 317739
Get Faster Acceleration
Easier Starts
Smother Idle
Higher RPM's
Better Gas Milage (GPH)
Safer for motor than stock steel reeds.

Bought on ebay.
Did not replace block gaskets, and the blocks where clean as a whistle, carbs where rebuilt about 6 months ago and motor was not spiiting gas and sneezing prior to installation of reeds.

WhenI throttle up using the carb linkage on the side of motor in nutural I can see gas spraying from the carbs outward like a mist and the more I throttle up it begans to drip out the bottom of the air cover

Sounds like you replaced the reeds with a set that opens "easier" than the stiffer S.S. stockers and now you got a lean condition when you crack it open.
I'd crank out the low speed screw maybe 1/2 or so, and see what happens.
A low float height in the carb(s) will cause a lean mixture, (less gas in the "pool" to draw from.
A gas spray is kinda sorta normal when your running, remember it is pulling gas out of a hole in the center of the carb.
When I replaced stock reeds for performance reeds on 2 smoke motorcycles, I always had to richen up all 3 circuits a step or 2 .

Well I don't know why it did what it did, but it broke 2 of them in halve and warped a couple more, in the process of removing these power reads and putting back my stock ones, if it aint broke people don't fix it!

Putting old stock reeds back in, there is no corrosion or visible wear.

If it aint broke don.t fix it!

Sounds like install instructions wasnt followed, below aree from website:"
"Reed blocks with rubber coated valve faces should be sanded smooth for better sealing with new installed performance reeds. Put a sheet of 400-600 grit wet sand paper on a piece of flat glass or counter top and use a little water and sand reed blocks slightly to improve reed sealing surface."

Aluminum reed blocks can have the same process done but with 600-800 grit wet sand paper. It is imperative to have a smooth defect free reed valve sealing surface when installing any reeds.

Yep, that's the first thing I thought too when I read that it was spitting fuel out the front of the carbs. It'll do that if you're not getting a good seal between the reeds and reed block.

Also, did you by chance not use the reed stops?

I've had fiberglass reeds from Chris Carson Marine for a couple of years now. They're great, much smoother idle than with the stock reeds.
