Voltage regulator for SLA battery

I have a 1993 Yamaha 20hp outboard, manual start, but equipped with charge coils. It was rigged with a Stanley regulator, but this produces over 16 volts when hooked to a regular lead acid battery. What regulator is suitable for charging a sealed lead acid battery from this source?

My guess would be you need one made for a Yamaha. Are you getting the 16V with it connected to the battery or not connected to anything?
