Are there any glues I should be aware of that could degrade gel coat/fiberglass?

I actually was worried about solvents thinking they would be what my react haha. I wish I was good at chemsitry.

When I was installing my KeelShield, the instructions specifically stated to use only isopropyl alcohol as the final cleaner. Acetone and lacquer thinner were not recommended because they supposedly leave behind a residue.

I believe acetone will also soften gel coat in large amounts.

Im more concerned the selleys solvents may soften the gel coat etc. I dont actually know which brand my keel protector is and have emailed the 3 big companies asking which glue and none have replied.

5200fc is just too hard and permanent for this small job.

Its actually only about 6 inches and one side of the delam is still joined. Kind of like a Pita Pocket but without the salad haha. So is going to be fun to sand, not. But has to be done.

You will NOT be leaving Acetone on the surface of the fiberglass long enuf for it to do any damage. It would take a soaked rag left on the glass for hours for it to even come close to doing damage. As for residue, I'm doubting that since you will be coating both surfaces with the contact cement and I've used solvent based contact cement for years, prewiping with acetone and NEVER had adverse affects. BUT This is ONLY my opinion sooooo, you are free to to as you see fit. I seriously think you are WAY OVERTHINKING THIS. You should have this done already and moving on to something else. Again just my opinion.

Thanks, Im just nervous about putting a hole in the boat. In my head im imagining the chemicals eating away through the glass haha, so yes am way over thinking it. Will just get it done.

My small local hardware store was out of rollers, will a kitchen rolling pin do the job or say a big round jar?

Rolling Pin works good too! I've used em before. Fiberglass is pretty tough stuff. Don't worry so much!!!;)

Im only worried as the local boat builder said contact cement wont hold it over time in water and that 3m 5200fc is a better choice, but its such a small bit to fix and a big tube is $30 more than contact cement and Ill never use it again. We are out of work so on tight budget.

I rang sellys and they said it would not hold up under the water line. Although I suspect it would if the edges were sealed with sika or 5200, but may as well just use Sika 291 than by 2 products?

Stupid 6 inch pocket on stupid keel guard, so darn annoying.

Thanks all and especially woodonglass.

Im building a wood 14ftr next year so wont have this problem :)

ive decided to remove it, there is just too many pockets I have found, they are really hard to get in and under and the rubber tears. it must be old.

so now it will be a job of removal and glue removal, blah.

Probably your best solution, maybe install a new one properly with good prep work beforehand.

Do you have "BedLiner" DownUnder!!! One of our members used it on his boat and he's reporting that it's holding up really well. He taped off his keel about 3" on either side and rolled on several coats of the Truck Bedliner material to form his own Keel Guard. Did it on the entire length of his Keel, Bow to stern. It looked nice too. You can get it in a variety of colors as well. Says it's working well. Something to consider.;)

hmmm good ideas. yes this is my idea is to replace. you can get much cheaper ones than the original here now. the original rubber has become a little, not brittle, but less strong and i thought why bother trying to sand in between the hull in pockets everwhere Ill just take it off and start again, this time just the bow to midship? for me its only for when beaching on sand. ive never hit rocks or dropped my boat on its transom.

another question, aside from peeling the rubber, will acetone help me remove it and its glue or should i use something expensive like mek?

Just checked, we have a bedliner kit from the auto store DIY for $110 (with roller and brush etc). Any chemicals that can degrade GC/GRP?

Xylene like Mek is also an adhesive reducer that does great on removing all kinds of glues.
