harsh vibration of acceleration 230b

So decided to take family out for day on lake after grueling royal rumble with carburetor (now fixed). After 3 hours of cruising around we decided to stop and fish for a while. We fished for about 2 hours and decided to take a final spin before packing up. Boat fires right up but I notice a rattling noise coming from the engine area that would start and last a few seconds and then stop again on and off at idle. I couldn't really get into it with 2 kids wife and dog on board. I did notice that it would sort of stop depending on position of trim? So after messing with the trim I decided to give it gas and a hard vibration rattled the crap out of the entire boat. If I pushed throttle through it would plane and stop on way back to boat ramp. Motor sounded good overall at idle and wot gets me up to 4800rpm. Also noticed that there was some noise possible vibration coming from drive area on sharp turns. I'm going to pull drive this weekend. im mechanically inclined with car motors but this is my first boat and I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Any input/ thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Pull the upper gear box and inspect the ujoints and PDS bearings. No need to pull the entire outdrive. Pulling the upper is described in the adults only sticky, volvo info.

Thanks captmello . Pulled upper gear box this afternoon. Came off fairly easily thanks to the instructions on adults only section. Pulled out drive shafts I think it's called it slid right out. Flashed in a light in there and there was a bearing completely destroyed. Is this a bellow bearing and what would be the best way to proceed? Going to go ahead and change u joint while I'm there.

You lost the PDS bearing. Do a search, plenty of threads on replacing them

While you are replacing that, Make sure your damper is ok....no cracks.

Top of the bell housing is a grease fitting.
It feeds direct to the bearing.
Make sure you grease this after it's back together.
I think to check the damper/ absorber you'd have to pull the motor.???

Yep and if he has 2 bearings that is what will be happening anyway.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I went ahead and orders 72 to 75 from link below And a drive shaft bellow. I read on another thread here that if the grease seal on motor end is in tact and working there should be no need to pull the motor And from the diagram in the link below it shows only one bearing. I'm under the impression that I wI'll not be pulling the motor... is that correct?

If it's a 4cyl(which it is) you can do the job from the outside.
Now if it was a V-8 you could inspect the damper.
No reason to pull the motor.

Do you have #66 on the diagram?
Sometimes there is a plug there. Remove the plug and install the zerk.

Somewhere along the way, someone thought they could use a "sealed" bearing and the zerk fitting was removed.

Well everyone know that things don't quite work as they planned.The bearing fails from moisture or just goes bad.
Then your fixing.

Also, #71 in your link, the inner seal should be replaced.

from this link you'll want to replace the two orings, #7 and 32, and seal #29 while you've got it apart. If the connection, #28 is corroded, replace it also.
while tempting, I would not reuse orings.

You'll also need the orings for the drain and dipstick...

#64 should work for both. Get extras of these.

Hopefully these will get you back on the water. sometimes when the bearings fail like they did in your boat it can damage the flywheel cover which is the housing for the drive shaft. Hopefully yours is ok.

Thanks again for all of the information. So I finally had time to start cleaning out the drive shaft housing and pulling the pieces out of it. The housing itself seems to be in pretty good shape. I did notice a little rust on the motor end. I have the outer seal and clamps off. Problem is the bearing race is still in the housing and it's not budging. Any tips on getting this suckered out. My buddy is welding some contraption to attach to a slide hammer to try tomorrow. Also though about drimmeling a notch to chisel at to break it up. I think there's a groove/stopper on the other side keeping it from being knocked sideways in there.

There is a seat for the bearing/race.
You should be able to get a slide hammer in there to remove the race.
If you start trying to "chip" it out your gonna end up with a buggered seat.
The housings soft aluminum and it will get chewed up pretty quick.
Try PB or WD and some heat.
Spray, heat, quick cool down.Repeat.3-4 times.
Then use the slide hammer.
