My buddy hadn't run is outboard in about 3 months and the other day he decided to make the block so to speak. We started down the canal without any issue out of the engine. For whatever reason he put the engine in reverse(from idle) and it just started clanking. Not just when going from neutral to reverse but the whole time. We quickly put the engine back in idle. jacked the motor out of the water and attempted to go into reverse again but it didn't make the noise. Put the engine back into the water and bam same clank.

Any ideas what could be causing the clanking when under load?

Was lower unit off for service ? --If so the shift rod may have been turned.-----Or simply see if adjusting the cable moves it fully into reverse.

No the lower unit hadn't been off in at least 2 years. The boat ran like a beast 3 months ago and has since sat on a lift. I was just trying to get a general "it could be this" answer to narrow down troubleshooting.
Sounds like gear linkage or shift dog might be buggered up.

Any online sources for repair manuals for the 92 175 evinrude intruder spitfire series?

Check the shifter linkage or the bushings for it. I had the same problem on mine. The bushings for the shifter linkage wore out and reverse would not engage fully. 50 cents for new bushings and about 1 hour of time and it was back to working good again. I have an old motor but who's to say it couldn't happen to something newer.

Well my brother in laws attitude towards all things outboard are if it isn't broke don't fix it. This motor has only had the impeller changed out 2 times in it's life. still running like a champ.

Sounds like he isnt into a stitch in time saves nine. No preventative maintenance on an impeller will lead to a long long journey back home from overheating (stopping-cooling then continuing on) or a long powerhead rebuild= guess you cant chose your family though eh
