Rebuilding a 1981 MCM 260 and it's been a bit of a puzzle since the person I bought the boat from dismantled it. At the final stages and I'm really stumped on how and where to mount this shift plate. I also have a 1983 MCM 260 that has a shift plate that is mounted to the starboard manifold, but looks completely different from my 1981 shift plate. I've attached pictures from the 1981 260.

Any ideas?

The bracket you have is used with an engine which also has the reverse lock valve on it.

Does your outdrive have a reverse lock?

Edit: here is a good thread

Not sure; first time I've ever heard of reverse lock. I'm going to be buying a new SEI SE106 drive.

Bondo knows more then I about the lock valves, but the valves are located on the plate in your pic. The valve closes and keeps the drive from coming up in reverse. Now if you have the newer trim pump then you don't need it. PM Bondo and see if he can advise

What year transom assembly are you going to use? And what trim pump model are you going to use?

The lock valve bracket assembly was typically seen at the rear of the engine and I believe it may have been mounted to the transom assembly.
Here's more of an example, https://www.perfprotech.com/mercury...transom-plate-and-shift-lever/assembly/1591:2

Well I was hoping to use a more modern transom assembly but if it turns out that my original ones are where the shift plates are mounted to I may be stuck w. the old ones. I'll have to drop by the boatyard and inspect the inner transom plate to see if it will accept my shift plate.

Also, I'll have to inspect the trim pump to see which one it is. I'm betting it's the older style that needs a reverse lock valve.

Thanks for the tips!

Ayuh,.... In yer picture of the shift switch plate, it sets like in the picture, 'n the 2 holes on the bottom piece, slip over the 2 top bolts on the transom plate,...

If yer trim pump has a hard plastic hyd. return line, it needs the reverse lock,....
If it's got crimped hyd. lines, it don't,...
