The original starter went out on my boat and took it to the local boat parts store and they sent it out to get a quote for a rebuild and they quoted me $260. I found some starters online for about $160 from Sierra and other aftermarket suppliers and they say that they are the replacement for the type of starter I have but wanted to make sure or if I should pay the $260 to rebuild the old one.

Could someone look at these starters that I picked that I believe are replacements and let me know if these ones will work or not? And if they won't work are there any that will. Thanks.

This is the sierra starter that the link that is ********* out. The part number is 18-5919 and the description says "Replaces OEM #0988217. STARTER Permanent magnet I/O starter For: Late model GM - 12 3/4" flywheel Replaces: 988217"

Starter.jpg

And the other link was to the Sierra 18-5911 but doesn't show the 2 bolts and looks a little shorter based off the picture.

Do you have a serial number for your engine?

Reason I ask is I am unable to find a 1977 260, but can find a 1977 250

Ayuh,.... The starters for Chevy based boat motors come in two basic flavors, the staggered bolt pattern, for the 14" flywheel,....

'n the straight across bolt pattern, like yer's, for the 12" flywheel,....

Whether ya go with the newer permanent magnet motor, or the ole big heavy motor is yer choice,...
I like the newer lighter style myself,.... Plenty of power, 'n easier to service,...

Ok thank you. Could you also help me out on picking the right alternator? I was told to get a 3 wire alternator and the one that I can find that seems to be suitable is a Sierra alternator part # 18-5957.

I do not remember the exact model that is on it right now but it is original and I believe it is a Delco Remy alternator. I got it tested and it works okay but the bearings are shot and is a single wire setup. We are planning on just running a CB radio, gps/fish finder setup and maybe a stereo with a power amp and that is why I was told to get a 3 wire one. At the moment the only electrical accessories on it right now is an old depth finder from sears.

Agree with Bondo it will work and only reason to go with a three wire is IF you plan to add a 2-bank battery setup and/or install an isolator in line with the ALT

Hmm... I think the guy said I need a 3-wire so I could get the most out of it and be able to run the power amp without any problems. But if I can run a 1-wire with a power amp than I will go with that. But I will ask the guy what the reason is for his advice and match it with what you and Bondo said.
