Jealous on the progress, just saying, not hating. Looking good cowhune. One question though. I was planning on wrapping my deck with carpet then laying it in (after sealing ofcourse). So its wrapped and tight. any reason you put the deck down first then gonna cover it? Maybe its something Im missing in a step I need to consider.

Well, simple answer: that's how SC did it with the vinyl. Furthermore, I'd prefer to have one solid run of carpet rather than having seams at each piece of wood. If you were to wrap the wood, you would also have to make adjustments to your cuts to compensate for the thickness of the carpet when butted against each other.

For the most part the edges will all be covered. The only edge that is visible is under the consoles I believe. When I reinstall the side panels in the boat I will fasten them down through the carpet into the floor which should hold it nice and tight.

That there sir is what I didnt think about and completes my picture in my mind. But I might still wrap my front half of mine ( just cause of my planned lay out). Good Info.



P.S. Careful what you wish for. LOL, I already had dishes tonight, Baby wake up bottle and diaper, Probably another by morning, and 3 days to indefinite of yes hunny so I can get a spray gun to paint like Otter sent me a link to.

I'm having a hard time sourcing out aluminum/aluminum rivets with a 1" grip range inside Canada. Apparently Fastenal is no longer open to the public which sucks big time because I'm pretty sure they have what I need.

I found some aluminum/steel mandrel rivets with a 1" grip range but I don't think thats a great option.

That really sucks, I even called the Fastenall I have dealt with for years and they said nope, must be nice to be so busy to be able to tell business to get lost.

No kidding eh. A buddy I used to work with has an account with them so I may be in luck. How important is the large flange? They look like they are nearly twice the price as regular flange alu/alu rivets from fastenal.

I just picked up some aluminum/steel mandrel with a large diameter head today for my floor from bolt supply. I had the same response from fastenal. I went with the steel mandrel because I understand they will grip stronger. I'll coat them good with 5200 or 4000 and hope for the best. Also try Aklands

The large flange is pretty important it spreads the force from the hull and floor flexing over a larger area on the ply and keeps the rivets tight

Ok, I placed an order for 100 large flange alu/alu 3/16" - 1" grip range rivets through a friend at fastenal. Hopefully I can get them before this weekend. If not I'm sure I can find enough to do on the boat to keep me busy.

Last night I pulled the consoles apart and carpeted them. I'll post some pics of those once they are reassembled.

Question: Do you think 5/8" plywood is a good choice for front/rear casting decks and those side panels?

Or 1/2" with some extra bracing.......I'm leaning towards 1/2" now for cost and weight reasons.

5/8"is my choice all the way, it is amazing how much more solid the the decks are.

Perfect ! Just got back from Home Depot. The 1/2" was all crap so I went with the 5/8". Glad to hear I made the right call. I don't want my casting decks flexing too much. Thanks dozer.

Yep, 5/8" won't raise the deck height much. 3/4" raises it enough to cause problems w/ the windshield fitment and alignment.

I actually used 3/4" for my floors. I just picked up the 5/8" for the front/rear casting decks.


I got the rear casting deck sorted out yesterday. Just have to seal the wood and work out the little details. Putting the transom back in was slow going and the old hardware was problematic but I got it all to work. Now I just have to pull them each out to seal up with 5200.

Ok, small update but man it sure felt like a lot of work.

Pulled out all the deck screws and put in alu/alu rivets. After that I put down the floor carpet and carpeted the side pocket and bow area as well. I carpeted a bunch of the rear casting deck wood too but no pic's of that yet.



This picture is from last weekend after I got the wood all cut for the rear casting deck. I hadn't cut out the splashwell at this point but you can see what direction I'm headed. I'll take some more detailed shots of it all while I'm putting it together for good. I still need to sort out the support/compartments under the deck and the actual splashwell. I'm going to salvage the aluminum from the original on that part.

Nice progress. Looks like your casting deck at the rear is gonna be nice. Are you gonna have fuel and battery storage under it? A simple access door at the front?

If you get the chance to check out budski's rebuilds he has added a rear casting deck to a couple of nice restos.

Thanks tnt, yeah you got it. I was going to get fancy with hatches but decided to just go simple and have the front access. I wasn't sure at first but there is plenty of height to crawl in there and access the bilge and what not. And thanks, I'll check him out.

I like that rear deck, it helps me with my layout ideas! I like the carpet job too, I wasnt going to do my sides but I probably will now.
