Hello all;
Here's my question; The trim sender on my 1997 Mercruiser Bravo II drive is not working, the gauge is pegged all the way up and does not move when I move the drive up and down .Everything worked fine before winter lay up. Is there a way to test the sender and or gauge to see what the problem is ?
Thanks.

Loosen the screws holding the sender on the starboard side of the gimbal. You could even remove the sender. Turn key to ON and rotate the sender to see if you get movement. Move then likely you will need to replace it, they go bad often.

Well, a friend of mine replaced his by cutting the wires and splicing the new one in with heat shrink connectors with heat shrink around both of them. Still working. There's also a kit to go around the gimbal install. It involves drilling a hole for a brass fitting that the wires run through.

I changed my trim sender and trim limit switches on my Alpha One Gen One 2 months ago. Just cut the wires, spliced them to the new ones, heat shrinked them and then put liquid tape over them. So far no problems. Others here will say that it is only a temporary fix. Guess I will find out as time goes by.

One problem with cutting the wires is that often the wires themselves have the first stages of corrosion and don't last long. Another is that cutting and soldering causes a short length of 'stiff' wire that can't bend properly. The first section of flexible after the join becomes a weak point, and will be the first place the wire will break (remember theses wires move around quite a bit when you are steering and trimming the drive).
