If it's made in Japan coulkd be a Yam or Tohatsu rebadged engine. It's a 2 stroke 2 or 3 cylinder engine ?

On the usual Mariner Parts pages, the don't go by year but by Horse Power and serial numbers only. So I haven't found your engine listing. Is your 40HP a 2 cylinder, or 3 or even 4 cylinder engine? They show 40HP engines for all number of those cylinders...

If you post pics of both sides of powerhead can tell if it's a rebadged Tohatsu or not. If beingTohatsu could be a M40C model.
