Mercruiser 3.0L Starter

I have a Mercruiser 140 3.0L. The block number is 2770087, Serial number is 6209706, and the drive unit serial is 6214429. The problem i have is I dont know the year. And my starter went bad and i need to replace it. the engine is in a 1996 Bayliner 1850ls but its not the original. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks jeff

Straight across bolt Chevy pattern starter,...

If the boat is a 1996 then it looks like someone put in a much older engine package in the boat. The engine serial number comes up as an MERCRUISER - (140 H.P. (1982) Serial No: 06209706 Model No: 01406002 Parts Catalog No: 90-86183 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selec...?doc_nbr=86183

The drive info is, MERCRUISER - (MC1 1.98:1. (1982) Serial No: 06214429 Model No: 01985012 Parts Catalog No: 90-99985

On the starter it has a tag on it " Marine SAE J1171" I cant get a pic sorry... Bondo So a starter for a 1995 Merc 3.0 will work on this engine?
