Thats a nice looking rig. Ive been trying to keep my eye out for an islander that i can restore down the road. My goal is to have a jupiter, super sport, islander and a jetstar. my wife disagrees though. lol

I'm in an apartment now and storing this one with the generosity of a friend, but once I have a place to put them, I'd love to add an open top 26' to this! and maybe a little super sport!

I got her out onto the water yesterday. Spent about 3 hours zipping around. No fishing as this was a shakedown run, but we put about 22 miles under our belts and the gas needle barely moved (I checked, it is working pretty well). The motor is fantastic! As I suspected, it still has the outdrive from when it was a 4.3, so it is geared and propped very strangely. I'm going to look into changing props for the time being so I don't have to shell out the money to change the outdrive.

When washing the boat today, I noticed that what was a small soft spot in the center piece of the deck is now collapsed plywood. I'm going to repair just this section for now, but I'm planning on doing the entire deck in a year or two. Does anyone know where I can that vinyl covering that came with the boat or something similar to it? Thanks!


I'm also going to dive into an electrical project on it soon, and I'll be sure to document it well here.

Glad you had a good shakedown cruise. If the bellows are cracked you're running the risk of wiping out the gimbal bearing, ujoints and or filling the boat with water if you continue to run it like that the drive bellows just may split open. Personally speaking trying to prop up a OD that's geared wrong is asking for failure. I would get a new SEI drive and sell that one with the 1.81 gearing to recoup some cash.

Bellows and raw water impeller were replaced last week before the shakedown run . Wasn't about to roll them dice!

I was expecting to hear that about the gearing. Is it a reasonable project to re-gear the outdrive?

Pulled the center piece of the deck up. The wood is pretty beaten up, but didn't fall apart. The good part is it appears the foam surrounding the fuel tank feels dry. I'm hoping that is reflective of the rest of the foam. I need to do a good ole cleaning in here before I lay down the new wood.

RE: the vinyl flooring. I think I found it from Marideck. I've got a sample square coming to see if it's close to the same. If it is, I'll pick up a roll to do the whole boat.

Just straight to the plywood deck. It's loaded with mold, and the deck had some interesting mushrooms and other fungi growing on it. I'm thinking just some rags and soapy water on top of the tank, not wanting to do anything more aggressive. This plywood just had vinyl directly stapled to it. I'm thinking it wise to coat the wood in either some West System or varnish. Any suggestions?

if that was me and I saw that on top of my tank I would probably accept the fact I would want to see what else is under that deck.but that is just me if I clean the top of that tank and put the deck back down, the back of my mind would be rolling with what else is under there

Superclean is sold at Walmart in the auto section and is very effective at removing greasy crud without damage to hoses, wires or the metal. I'm a Helmsman spar varnish user on ply, haven't tried the epoxy resin.

That right there is some fine looking ply you got, nice 7 layer 3/4" with no voids! It even sounds different when the saw blade hits it. :thumb:

It isn't perfect (ACX), but even the C side is nice and smooth. The saw cut through it like it was nothing. It was Wonderful!

Only the center piece is OSB. The two side pieces are original ply that also need some love, but weren't nearly as bad as the center section.

Nice cut! Id seal and soak them knots up good with what you go with as a sealer. I would have tried to put that side down. But your going vinyl so I doubt water should be able to get them and soak into them anyhow. Nice fit! Measure twice and cut once! Im still messing that up a little as i go.

That's got two coats of spar varnish on it. I decided to put the A side down since it won't be covered with vinyl. I can't wait to do the other two pieces and get a rock solid deck!

This weekend was electrical time. We dove in to understand how the boat was wired, and made some changes to make sure off means off.

A Blue Sea fuse panel went into the rats nest and now powers the GPS, Sonar, and cabin lighting. When I finish, it will also power the navigation lights, blower, horn, and any other house load. The fuse panel is switched from a new DPDT switch and ACR between the start and house batteries. The bilge will bypass the switch so I can turn off the rest of the power when the boat's in the water.

We also pulled out about 30 feet of wire.

Most of it was good wire. Some of it was two pieces of wire spun together under electrical tape and some speaker wire providing 12 V power. I'm glad we did this project!

In the mix of this new wiring architecture, we took some of the leftover wiring and got the helm light working again! IT HAS BATTLE MODE!

...aka HAL 9000 mode.

Love the battle mode! I thought Id see speakers once I saw the speaker wire.
