Need some help guys. Took the boat out yesterday was running perfect then all sudden boat stopped put it in netural and shut motor down checked everything looked good. Fired up the motor went put it in gear and it was very hard to do and motor would rev up wasn't in gear then tried reverse same thing. Thought maybe the shifter cable broke. Took the outdrive off far enough to check the cable all is good there goes back and forth as it should. So I then took the outdrive completely off the boat. When I turn the shaft in any direction the props do not turn. I'm lost on what to do next any help would be appreciated.

Start by checking the gear lube color. If good, and you cannot move the shift fork on the drive and engage the drive shaft with the prop, then remove the top cap off the drive. My guess is there may be some broken gears.

When was the drive lube last changed?

When I unscrewed the top vent screw had a lot of air come out. And found some metal on the screw. Not looking good for the home team

Sure sorry to hear, but it sounded like melted gears.
Not that it will help but was your drive lube bottle empty?

No it was at the full line. What the best course of action replace both upper and lower or the upper? Anyone know best place to get one at?

The bottles are good sight glasses but they to require maintenance. Every few years when lube is changed the bottle needs to be emptied, clean out with diesel or mineral sprits, then refilled. The issue is the lube container gets clogged up and does not pass back to the drive.

There are several places which sell them, but I would recommend replacing the entire drive unless you are willing to take it completely apart, cleaned and reassembled. Don't go with an upper only without rebuilding the lower.

Look at Offshore Only.com they have a swap and a classified section, Craigs list but beware. Depending on what ratio you need I might have an idea.
