mercruiser engine cover installation

Have a dumb question. The engine cover that goes on top of the aircleaner, is there a nut between the air cleaner and cover or does the cover rest directly on cleaner?

It would help if you mentioned what type of motor you have and serial number/year.
Are you talking about some sort of cosmetic cover? Also, it might be a flame arrestor, not air cleaner.

sorry, 99 5.7 tbi efi bravo 3. It's a cosmetic cover. And yes it is a flame arrestor it goes over. Bought the boat in pieces and this was in the pile of parts.

On my 5.7, the cover rests directly on the flame arrestor and a wingnut secures both to the engine.

Im not even sure what the purpose of that cover is. My original 5.0 didn't have a large cover, just a round cover the same size as the flame arrestor that held it down. I would think putting a large cover over the engine would collect the hot air rising and not allow then engine to get fresh cool air from the ducts.

Ehhh I threw that crappy looking thing away when I bought my K&N. Its chrome now so worth at least 10hp!!

thanks guys. If anything it is useful because either has the serial numbers , spark plug gap, timing Settings and some other info on it. Like a quick reference guide:)
