I've never pulled a flywheel before and hence I don't which type of puller I should buy. Options are the three jaw puller or the harmonic balance set up with the three screws.

What the difference? Pros and cons of each?

Also if the three jaw is an option what size should I get? they seem to come in 3",6" and 8" sizes. I'd like to get the size that allows it to be used on the following outboards:

1) 2001 Johnson 4hp and 1996 Johnson 8HP
2) Late 80's Suzuki 15 HP
3) of course the old Johnson 40 HP I'm working on now

As usual thanks in advance

A puller using the 3 bolts is the ONLY option.------3 leg puller is NOT to be used !!!

Well that's that's a pretty definitive answer thank you. I like to learn so why should a 3 jaw never be used? Risk of bending the flywheel or crank?

Exactly. There is a guy on these forums presently that tried to use a three jaw puller and snapped off the outer edge of his flywheel and was asking for help to see what he could do about it. So never use anything but the three bolt type puller on an OB flywheel. And also, and this is very important, use only grade eight bolts as well. If you don't, I can near about guarantee you, you will break off the bolts otherwise. Those flywheels are very hard to remove and it takes some serious torque to remove them... JMHO!
