How hard is it to rebuild an alpha 1 gen 1 lower leg?

Only part on my power drive that hasn't been rebuild or replaced is the lower leg and I'm thinking of picking up a spare lower to rebuild over the winter so I can have a new setup next year. Is it hard to do with basic tools in a basic shop?

Yes. You need a bunch of special tools. What do you mean by "rebuild" though? Replacing seals, U-joints ok. Once you start messing with the gear sets it gets complicated and expensive.

Yep nothing basic about the drive. Though im sure you could do it with a merc manual and the special tools.

Tools you'll need. This is directly from the Merc service manual, and yes, you need them all. There are others on the list, but these you CAN NOT do the job without.

Having read a few other of Suprathepegs' threads, I think he's looking at buying up lots of spares for his boat, rebuilding everything and then have them sit around until something breaks on his boat, then just do a straight swap to 'fix' it....

That a good way to not have much down time when something does go wrong..

If I was you, I'd buy a brand new sei for about 895.00$$ with shipping. Just the parts alone will run you about 700$$. Nevermind all the special tools needed

Yup, I have a spare leg, carb, and am looking for a spare engine for that same reason. Good plan if you have the space and can find some cheap spares.

I guess where you guys live and how cheap stuff is there, that can make sense, but here (Australia), that would mean having 15 or 20 thousand dollars worth of equipment sitting there burning money.

Chris......
