Newbie in training!! I have a 1999 Regal 19 with 4.3 Volvo Penta SX Lots of issues. Bought the boat with a cracked block R&R ed with a long block first problem no oil on dip stick??? started with 5qts after trying 4.5 now up to 7 qts no oil on dipstick. But get 70lbs oil pressure? Any ideals? Next the alternator is not charging So R&R with new one motor won't turn off or charge. Checked wiring all was good and proper connections. Took off new one put old one back on still no charge but al gauge's work again and engine shuts off as should with key. Where to start? SELL IT?? Naa to soon for that. Thanks for your thoughts an experience

I would guess you either have the wrong dipstick or it was not installed correctly. I would suggest removing the dipstick tube and then put the dipstick into the hole. See how far it has to go in to find oil.

See if I get your issues correctly

With new alt the engine will not turn off, but with old one it will,
New alt gauges do not work, but old alt the gauges do work.
Neither alt shows the system is charging.

It statements above are correct, something is miss wired. Does the engine have a TKS carburetor?

first, which kind of long block? Automotive or marine? and which kind of dipstick?

Im picturing the wrong dipstick tube installed and the dipstick curling up under the crank as it hits the windiage tray.

regarding the Alternator, I am with Alldodge on this, something is amiss with the wiring. did you replace the alternator with the exact same, or did you replace the alternator with a different brand?

The dip stick installs thru the where the drain plug is normally. I used a marine long block. Replaced alt with exact same? I have ohm all the wires from alt and they appear to be correct.

Ya got me scratching my head on this one, your saying the dipstick went in where the drain plug is? I'm seeing the drain plug on the bottom of the pan

Understand the getting old part, I have OGG (old guy groans), but I've been told it beats the alternative, but never heard of anyone coming back complaining

Bypass the fuel pump relay so the engine stays running. Then check the voltage at the L2 terminal of your alternator.
