Nissan 70 hp - something like a "whale tail" on the right side of the outboard.

I recently purchased an 86 procraft 1510 with a Nissan 70hp outboard. Performs excellent. At speed, there is a column of water on the right side of the motor that reaches nearly to the outboard cover. Tends to splash in front of the motor onto the deck as well. There are two small transducers on that side of the boat but nothing that might tend to move that much water. Is this normal?

I have a bud with a 15ft Boston Whaler powered by a Johnson 70 that did the same thing and it was caused by his one transducer. He glued a piece of 4inch PVC to the transom to deflect the spray. He started with a full "ring" and then cut a notch to fit over the transducer. I will try to post a picture. Works great!

Encouraging! I'd certainly appreciate a photo of the pvc fix. Any other potential solutions?

If it is a Humminbird 'ducer, give them a call. I believe they have an insert to stop the water from flying up. Mine does the same thing. I just haven't made the call. I get a rooster tail too......

+1. Waiting times can be a little much at H.Bird, but helpful. Meantime, might check the location of your transducer -- maybe a better location?

Mount it inside the boat and the problem will go away. Check my archives. I have defined the process many times.

It would be nice to see a pic taken of the motor all the way down and taken even with the bottom of the boat. I'm wondering if the AV plate is too low and causing the column of water. It should be level to 1" above the bottom of the boat. Normally a transducer that's set too low just spits a spray of water up from it not what I would call a column. I have my transducers set to where the leading edge is angled slightly upward to avoid the digging in..

Neither of us are there but my feeling on the subject is that if the engine were too low, you'd have water on both sides since everything is in balance as far as the hull to engine interface is concerned.

I had the same problem with my Humminbird transducer and just lowered it a little and fixed it completely.

Based on your info, I replaced the humminbird unit transducer and all with a lowrance. Rooster tail is gone! Works perfectly. Thanks for the feedback!
