Hi I have a1997 Campion boat with a Mercruiser 3.0 and lately, when it first goes into the water, she starts right up. When warm, hard starting. I got in home and when I went to wash out engine out hard starting again. the ignition coil looks old and rusted. I touched the side of it and it was hot. Should this be? could this be why I have the starting problem? The carb was rebuilt a few years ago. Thanks in advance..

Not that I think that's your issue... but with gas the way it is today, a carb rebuild is only as good as the fuel going into it, and left in it to sit.

Get yourself an inline spark tester and check it when it acts up... something like this Lisle 20610.. works great, under 15 bucks, and nice to keep in the boat tool box

Had a similar experience a few years back and found the coil to be bad as well. When the coil got hot the spark became weak, then after it cooled down the spark was hot again. Bought another stock coil but only lasted one season and the same thing happened again. Moved up to a flame thrower coil and have not had any issues since. Do follow Erics advice and get the spark checker then you will know for sure.

Thanks a lot airshot. I'm going to look into that coil. Starts right up when cold but hard starting when warm. What you said makes sense.

I have a Flamethrower II (45111 Epoxy-filled 45000 Volt ) coil installed on my Mercruiser 3.0L, and it gets pretty hot. With the non-contact thermometer I've read as high as 180 degrees. Still runs like a champ in my boat. Hot or cold, starts the engine right up.

Thank you very much eavega. I'll check it out. Does the coil get hot, or the engine?

That entire side of the motor seems to hover around 165 - 180 degrees. The Manifold side of the motor is about 150.
