I have a 1984 Mercury 50EL with the stock aluminum prop that has spun the hub. I have a SS 48 76228A-4 13p prop with no hub. Is there a hub kit that I can install myself to get this prop on my motor? I know nothing about hubs, have never had one changed out, and don't have a shop press. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Never tried it myself. Probably really hard to do without a press. Then alignment has to be checked so that the prop will run true. iboats sells new props cheap. Look at the top of the page under parts.

Is your stainless prop a smooth circular bore ? If so it was designed for a press-in hub with rubber cushion. If it has an odd shaped bore then it was designed for a replaceable hub and you should be able to buy one.

Dealers charge about 60 bucks to send your prop to a shop to be re-hubbed. The hub itself costs around 35 bucks but you don't have a press.

If you did have access to a press, pressing in a hub is simple and fast: You get a tapered roller bearing race of the correct size or something else tapered to ease the rubber in. Lubricate the prop and hub with soapy water, and press in the hub. Believe it or not, it doesn't take much force sometimes a 2 ton press is enough. Depending upon the design you press in the hub until the bronze center is even with the front (or rear) closed end. Do not use the prop for a day or two to let the rubber "set"

It is very rare that a re-hubbed prop will not run true. The hubs simply are self centering

I believe that prop is sold without a hub and you just buy a new hub kit and it slips into place Most Mercury props are sold that way now. Only question is which hub kit fits that motor and your engine. Call Mercury.

The props for my Mercury in my signature are all sold without hubs.

Okayeeeee. In reading thus far, Mr. Survey may in fact have a replaceable hub prop since he said he has "no hub" but did state "stock" prop which may mean that it's the OEM prop supplied with his '84 engine. So my question is, when did prop mfgrs start selling replaceable hub props? I guess time is getting away from me. I thought it was a quasi recent technology, but what do I know about it. Not much! Ha!

In the sentence after he talks about a stock prop he talks about the OTHER prop he has. The one that didn't come with a hub.

I just bought a Mercury outboard a few years ago and it has this type prop and my understanding is that it was long before that when they came out.
