I just noticed yesterday underneath my motor on the ground about 2 tsp worth of oil. When I wiped my finger through it, it was a really dark milky green color and smelled like oil. I noticed it is dripping from a small opening just above the prop where the water intake is at. I just replaced the gear oil a week ago but it shouldn't already be dark green ? Is this leaking normal or do I have yet another problem ?

Do you mean from here

If so its the exhaust outlet and it would be normal for unburnt oil from the fuel to drip from here.

The foul smell of an EP gear oil is unmistakeable. So unless it stinks like gear oil you have no problem.

( BTW this one is clean because it's a 6 hp Yachtwin and the exhaust gasses exit from somewhere else)

Pressure test the gearcase.-----Parts are very expensive and some are NLA.-------If there are leaks then a seal kit is needed.-------But it just may be oil from the exhaust.-------Was the motor last used with a lot of slow running / trolling ??

Captain: yes, mine is leaking from there - but my engine is also a yachtwin 6hp. So is that bad ?

Not really bad but one of the features of the Yachtwin is that the normal exhaust outlet is plugged so that exhaust gases exit via the outlets in the special 5" extension ( see where the pencil points in the picture below) so that when going astern you don't draw them into the prop and loose reverse thrust.

But there is a small drain tube which you can just see in the picture in #2, tucked in the corner by the water intake. It's shown on the parts diagrams along with the plug for the exhaust outlet. Maybe that's where the oil is coming from.

Whatever unburnt oil from the fuel leaking from around the lower unit is normal for a two stroke.
See the item on the Engine FAQs board about "Oil leaking around the lower unit"

You only have to worry if you find gear oil leaking or signs of water intrusion into the gearcase.

Thank you vic. I feel a little better after your response. I have one more question that is specific to the Yachtwin that maybe you can help me with also. Directly behind and above the fuel pump there is a small open hole, is that normal? or something wrong with mine? I have never noticed it until replacing my fuel pump recently but while trying to diagnose some issues with the engine I have to wonder if air is being sucked in through this hole and if it is suppose to be there? It is right where the fuel pump mounts on the engine - and directly on top. I can get a picture for you if needed, maybe it will help more.

It's 01:24 here. Time I'd gone to bed... I'll look at it latter in the day but there certainly should not be a hole through into the crankcase except for the vacuum pulses that drive the pump

There is a threaded (5/16") blind hole at about the 1 o'clock position. Thats all

Perhaps it is a hole that the factory uses to put this block into a fixture.---That fixture would be sent through the machines to process the part for various machining operations.

That's not the hole I am talking about. On mine when I took the fuel pump off the engine there was a hole on top of the piece where the fuel pump mounts onto the engine. No threads in it.

????-----So are you talking about the hole in the gasket directly between the screw holes for the pump ?--------You must realize that the fuel pump is driven by a positive pressure pulse and a slight vacuum pulse.-------That pulse comes from the crankcase and is the hole in the gasket !!!----It corresponds with the hole in the back of the pump that goes to the diaphragm.

Nope. Not that one. Where the 3 holes mount the fuel pump on the engine it sticks out a bit away from the motor. On top of that is a hole. I will get a picture this evening and post it. Almost looks like someone drilled a hole there but I don't know why. I will get a picture shortly.

No Title

Here is a picture of the hole I am wondering about. I have a few more pictures I can post also.

Could this possibly be causing my engine issues ? Problems sucking gas and running full throttle ? It is mimicking a fuel pump problem but the pump was new. Could air be sucked in through this hole and creating issues ?

It will if it connects with the vacuum pulse passage or if it goes through into the cranckase.

If it does either of those you will have to block it.

Even if it does not I think I would be tempted to fill it with JB Weld or a similar filled epoxy.
but ........ I'm sure I just said that somewhere else !
