Hi all, I recently saw a very small amount of oil in my bilge, maybe 1/4 cup total. My mechanic suspects it is a leak from the crankshaft pulley, he looked at it briefly but is pretty confident. I haven't had a chance to ask him yet, but if this is the case, will it require engine (1998 OMC 5.0 with volvo DP) removal to repair? Thanks in advance.

Depends on how much room you have in front of the motor, probably need about 2 foot to get the puller on and the harmonic balancer off, maybe a bit less. Will also need to remove water pump and timing chain cover

The mechanic recently replaced the water pump, so I'm sure thats not a problem. I'd have to measure the distance from the pulley to the end of the compartment to see how much room is there. If they remove the sump for the shower, I think it will be close. If my guy doesn't want to do it without pulling the engine, can you explain the process so I can ask other shops if they would like to take it on. I'd like to avoid engine removal if at all possible.

Ok, a bit of a correction, the mechanic at the marina states that the leak is from the timing chain cover gasket? Engine removal???

from the timing chain cover gasket

Same process previously mentioned. The crankshaft seal is installed in the timing chain cover. Same issue, same things have to come off only difference is your wanting to replace the timing chain cover gasket's, the crankshaft seal is just part of it
