My exhaust boot was smoking while running the boat off the water hose, is this normal, I was thinking it's cause it's not in water. I was gonna test it out tomarrow, boat was running hot off the hose cause I was leaking coolent from the rubber washers, gasket sealed them and no more leak. But the exhaust boot was heating up before I could see if the engine was gonna overheat

A smoking exhaust boot is not good. How was the hose water pressure and when was the last time the impeller was changed?

Describe how you were running on the hose. Did you plug the hole in the bottom edge of the drive?

Good picture Bruce.
If you didn't plug that hole you didn't get any water to the motor.
On a Volvo I plug that hole and duct tape the muffs in place(needs to be DRY).
The system is like a car with a radiator it holds pressure. So get a pressure tester and see if the fresh water side holds pressure.
