So its time to paint my fiberglass Monark trihull restoration, Ive been doing a LOT of reading and the rustoleum looks like an attractive option but only if I can get it to stick and last of course. I've seen numerous Rustoleum hulls and even topsides that look great on this an other forums but I cannot tell what everybody is using for primer if anything. The Rustoleum Marine Primer tech sheet says "not for use below the water line" even after being topcoated with Topside paint, which certainly surprised me. Rostoleum phone tech line said the same but the girl I talked to sounded 15 years old and "NO" is probably their default cover their b*** answer. So far I've used 3M marine glazing putty, dewaxed and sanded very thoroughly with 180 grit. I do have some bare fiberglass showing where I had to grind the gel coat for repairs. Do I even NEED to use primer or will the Marine Topside paint stick to properly cleaned and sanded gel coat and bare glass? Many other paint brands that I read up on use some sort of self etching primer on fiberglass or gelcoat substrates.
Not many posts on long term wear of Topside Enamel either, has anybody had a paint job last a few years in fresh water with this stuff? Sure is cheap compared to Supermarine, Interlux, Duralux, etc. Is Marine Topside suitable for use as a bottom paint for a fresh water trailered boat? Many thanks. stripes
