I took my 1979 25hp Johnson outboard to the lake today.Did not run very good, when I turned the tiller handle for more power the motor stops running. So I came home and put the motor in a barrel no problem it will throw the water out of the barrel when I ask for power.Thank everyone for all the help on this great forum.

Running on a hose or in a barrel is always different than the real thing, there's more back pressure on the exhaust when the boat's in the water.

Start with the basics, do a compression test, do a spark test with a variable gap spark tester (most engines' specs call for a good healthy spark at a gap of 7/16"), do a cylinder drop test (pull the spark plug wire off one cylinder at a time to see how much the engine slows down - if it doesn't lose any rpm on one you've found the bad cylinder).

I traded for this motor and the fella said he soaked the carb. overnight.I understand that does not mean it was done.I notice that when motor is idling I turn the lean and richness button the idling of the motor does not change.Does tell you members anything?

If you turn the needle clockwise, does it close all the way down? In other words, do you reach a point where it stops turning (when it is fully closed)?
