Forward Gear - bad or not?

I can see a couple chips on my forward gear, i'm ordering new parts and a clutch dog, do you think I need a new forward gear due to the chips?

Oh, I was about to say that gear is fine, till I noticed you said it is the Reverse gear.

The forward bearing in question is the picture in the #1 post, I just put the reverse and clutch picture in post #5 so people would know how they go together. I'm ordering part now and don't know if the forward gear is bad or not with the chips?

It would seem silly not to install a new forward gear !!---Also install a new forward thrust bearing.-----Anytime I have one of these apart it gets a new forward thrust bearing.-------Most folks are well aware of how lower unit gears fit / work on these motors.

Install a new gear that gear looks horrible . You run the possibility of ruining a new clutch dog do what racerone says.

Finally got the forward gear out, took me 2 hours to figure I had to unscrew the Phillip screw from the outside the housing so the shifter lever will come out.

Many people would use that gear. But really it is a judgement call. It probably will work, but also probably will cause more rapid wear of the new dog. I guess it is "you decide".

Just so you know, that wear is normal to some extent, but will happen much sooner if not shifted properly. People think shifting slowly and gently will be good for it. Wrong!! You want to shift swiftly with a snap. Slow shifting allows the corners to bang together several times before the dog slides fully into place.
