Help with value of used motor

I was recently given an old pontoon with a E28ELCED. This is an 89 28SPL with out power tilt, no tiller, with remote control. The toon is only good for scrap.

*I am not trying to sell it through this site and will not entertain any offers through this site as I don't want to break the rules.*

There is absolutely no market for this motor in my area. I am in a high rent type area where if you have a boat it is new or nearly so. I have searched the sites and can not find any comparables in my area. The motor is fairly low hours, by looking at it, and knowing the family, I would guess less than 300. Clean, runs well, complete. Crystal clear fresh water use for its life. Professionally maintained. One owner, a guy who is now in his mid 90's.

The question is what should I ask for it on CL or where ever. Normally I sell these types to a guy down the road who parts them out. I think this one should probably be sold as a runner. Someone who needs this will be driving a couple hours at least to get here from an area where people run fishing boats that this would work for. I am sure it has value to someone, I just need an idea of value to see if it is even worth the time of trying to figure out how to list it. I have never sold anything over the net.

have had some pretty good luck with CL. Post pics with the ad -- maybe try to sell the whole rig for $300 - $400. Use the contact via CL (don't like to post email or phone info. -- can do that when a potential buyer contacts you). And...could start higher and look for offers.

[will get a lot of views from out of area, so not limiting yourself in just posting in local area.]

In my area - fresh water, 6-month season, a motor like that in good running, tuned-up, clean-looking condition, with controls and a tank, might fetch $600-$900. If I'm taking a flyer on an unknown condition motor of that style, more like $200-$300.

Yep, same here. I'd say in my area that motor would grab $6-750 easily in my area. A good running 25hp or less seems to be in very high demand, because there are a ton of aluminum boats around here. People keep their aluminum "big Jon's" and put new "used" motors on them as they see fit. I see 25's/28's in fair condition going for $4-500 here all day. Central VA.

I live in FL and bought motors off of CL as far away as Kansas. I would put it on CL, if someone wants/needs it, they will buy it

Thanks for the replies all. I think I'll deal with this one in the spring. $5-600 bucks is not worth the PITA it would be to try to move it this winter. Might be able to get more in the spring anyways. I'll wait till I have one of my young computer savvy kids cleaning boats in the spring and give him/her a learning project. It will be worth the less than peak $ I may get to have them take it from begining to end and learn how the real world works; let them see where money for paychecks comes from.

Thanks again I-boaters!

if it is very clean and runs good.... it might be worth $800 up in the northeast...but the remote control is a draw back....very few people use such a small motor when they have remote controls and steering....if it was a tiller...it would be worth more...because of all the 12-16ft aluminum boats it could power!!!....I think it is basically a 30 hp with no gimmicks.....bob

I'll add my take.

I'm a small boat guy and basically only use the boat to fish as do many with these size engines. The problem I run into with these size boats, 14' -16' Jon's and utility hulls, are the ones that have a side steering console. There are a limited number of 20hp -35hp outboards that have a tilt tube to connect the steering to. All of the older OMC tiller engines do not have a tilt tube which makes it a pain. I searched for 2 months on CL to find a 30hp with a tilt tube to put on my 14.5' Sea Nymph.

Come spring I believe that engine and controls will easily fetch $600.00 or better. At least it would in the Chicago, Milwaukee, Twin Cities areas.

I'm seeing more and more of the old Bass Tracker I, II and III model hulls showing up on CL along with the other modified V Jon's from Alumacraft and Sea Nymph.

hey bonz -- got to get you into older motors. (I don't think I've had one under 50hp that HAS the built in tube, but can rig any of them for remote.) There's a splash well mount, and a clamp block kit -- also an old style that fits under the transom clamps. All work.

Well aware of those but if you have to buy them new it gets pricey in a hurry and finding that stuff used is difficult. Besides I just like being able to use the tilt tube for steering. Heck, I've even used the old cable and pulley systems in the past.

Yup. sort of thing you pick up at a meet or on Ebay when it's available -- for future use. New is expensive. Like the old cable and pulley system too. Cable is pretty easy to replace, if needed.
