1997 Mariner 200 efi magnum has metallic rattling when hitting 4800 rpms or more?

Not sure what the issue is here. The motor idles fine and takes off fine. I only hear this noise when i am at 4800 rpms or more and im full throttle when Im at 5000 rpms. I dont hear it when I am on Plain at 4000 rpm. I had a guy come look at the boat and he tested compression, all cylinders are around 90 psi. He then began to tell me it was the reeds and charged me alot of money to replace them and still having same problem. I also dont think he actually replaced the reeds. Afraid if I let this go it might not be a good thing.

no... needs ta be closer ta max.... type and size boat, offset, prop, motor height?.. 90 lbs is low but could be a gauge thing....

If you have EFI there may be diagnostic software to diagnose problems and log maintance, Borrow a laptop or tablet the cable is included, search e-bay.

Free outboard service manuals at www boatinfo.no/lib/library.html. Run it with the cover off and find the noise, We have a force125 were 4500-5500 rpm cruising rpm. Have somebody run the boat at 4800,you sit back at the motor with cover off and when you find it we can help you on the next step

I can't think on my feet,you said you had the reeds replaced,You don't have reeds on an EFI- electronic fuel injection outboard.
Do you have carbs or is it really EFI.

you need ta "rethink" this......all 2-stroke.. carb, efi or dfi.

plus ya get very little diagnostic information on tha pre-cdm (his) type motor ecu's......

might be a little detonation at a certain rpm.... sounds like ya might be 'lugin' it " a tad... if it was something "metal" probably gone south by now.....

+1 Duke...... I haven't run across a 2 stoke outboard that didn't have reeds yet.

Sorry about that, saw the efi and I thought he had a four stroke, I'm new to out boards, did, they even make EFI electronic fuel injection in 1979.

merc/mariner came in late '86 as a '87 production model..................
