Sheesh. That sounds like no fun.

I hear what you're saying. However, aside from a light coating of oil (which I'm wondering now if it may have been some lubricant the previous owner put directly on the shaft and that had built up near where it enters the housing), there is no other indication of a leak. Beyond the reservoir being a little low when I bought the boat. However, after running it about 75 hours this summer (which is more than what was supposedly put on it its entire life by the original owner) and keeping a close eye on it, the reservoir didn't seem to drop at all. I'll keep watching it closely to see if anything changes.

A slight film on the shaft is not probably uncommon. It has a typical hydrolic lipped seal and a backup ring and oring on outside. Typically what happens is seal age and durometer goes up and/ or shaft gets imperfections and erodes surface of the seal and then it leaks.
