I went to change the lower unit oil today and can not find the screw/plug to drain it out. I checked the manual I have and it is just not there. I spent what has to be a good 15 min going over and over it but nope not there. Motor is a 1977 Mercury 850. I do see a flush screw and another one about 1 inch down and to the left of it. Is that the drain hole? Doesn't seem like it would drain too well from there.

Yes I had looked there and could not see it so I went onto another project. Preping the motor for new paint. Well during my sanding I came across some type of filler, well I picked at it with a nail and low and be hold I found that someone filled in over the screw and painted it. So I was right in where I was looking just seems someone didn't think it should be there or something. No idea why they would really do that. Was not impressed.

Did the motor have a nose cone at all or people fill it because they think it goes faster

Maybe they forgot the washer and it was leaking - the best way to stop that is ,of course, with Bondo!!
