Remove carpet?

So my boat has back to back seats with red carpet around them on the desk and under them in the storage area. I am not so sure about keeping to carpet, it is old and nasty likely from 1977. Would it be a bad idea to just remove it and go with a fiberglass deck? I am just worried about how slick it will be, from the spot that is not covered under the bow it looks like they glassed and painted over CSM. Would that be too slick?

You can always add a fine sand to paint to make it non-slip. The problem with replacing the carpet is the appearance of the deck under it. It is not easy to get a good looking deck with a chop gun, which is what is usually used under carpet. Also most carpet is glued down, and the mastic is nasty looking and hard to remove.

There are other things to replace the carpet, like vinyl flooring and rigid cut to fit flooring. There are also a lot of indoor-outdoor carpets which look really good. These can go over the deck, usually as is.

On e of the reasons I was thinking to remove the carpet is because it would make draining water out much better and also I could use a hose to wash the boat out instead of a shop vac to pick up the dirt.

I'm anti carpet, so I removed the factory snap-in carpet and have covered pretty much every flat surface of my boat with Seadek.

My previous boat had nautolex on the deck, which wasn't bad; a bit slick when wet. There are some purpose made nonslip deck coatings out there as well which may be an option.

I have heard good things about seadeck about how much did yours cost per sq ft? Also where did you get it?

Sea deck might exceed the price of your boat - only sort of kidding. Just the swim deck replacement pad on my boat is $260 from SeaDek. There are some other more affordable similar products.

Haha yeah that would be quite a bit for a whole deck even though it is small. Maybe that should be out of the question. I ideally want something that drains water well and I can wash pretty easy while still not being too slick.

For the three areas shown in these pics, it was around $600. That's just an estimate cause I had it done a while ago and in two separate orders. My third order is in production now; a matching snow camo pad for my Yeti, the windshield pass thru nonskid, and the tops of the gunnels.

Ah I remember seeing that boat on here before very nice boat. That is not too expensive really but old jeep is right, its worth more than would be reasonable to put into this boat. Might look to do a paint and sand flooring.

I have decided I want to remove the carpet and will be using a non-slip paint/sand method. Next question comes on how I can remove the carpet and not ruin the paint/fiberglass below it. I am not liking how the carpet holds the water for so long and is taking a long time to dry even with a heater on it. I have soaked it a few times now cleaning the boat and it takes 2+ days to dry.
