Hi. New to the site. Hope this is in the right forum. Last year i went to start my boat for the 1st time for the year, and had NO fuel or spark. I am wondering if this could be a engine control module, or something to that effect, and with a boat being so old, where I could get a replacement module. If indeed that is my issue? Thanks!

Guessing it's cranking but won't hit and fuel pump isn't running. Don't go for the module just yet, need to do some testing first. Have you checked the fuses, breakers and relays yet? What have you done to determine there is no spark and fuel?

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

Yes, this is the right forum!

There's a couple of things we need to know before offering a lot of suggestions though,

We need to know what you have exactly!

Your engine and drive if they're really 1994, could be 1 of the following models.

584ACPMDA 1994
584AGPMDA 1994
58FACPMDA 1994
58FACPMDM 1994
58FAGPMDA 1994
58FAGPMDM 1994
58FBDPMDA 1994

If your boat is a 1994, your engine and drive could also be one of the following 1993 models too!

584APLJVB 1993
584APRJVB 1993
584DPEJVB 1993
584DPPJVB 1993
58FAPEJVB 1993
58FAPLJVB 1993
58FAPLJVN 1993
58FAPPJVB 1993
58FAPRJVB 1993
58FAPRJVN 1993
58FBPEJVB 1993

It's important to know the model because some were EFI and some were 2v or 4v (2bbl/4bbl) carburetors.

You said yours is EFI, some of those (FOMOCO) ECMs are no longer available, none are "cheep" and if it's "bad" you may be switching to a carb.

What do you have exactly?

Regards,

Rick

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses. I determined it has no fuel or spark by removing the fuel line to the pump and using a spark tester. Where do I check for the model #? Thanks! I know it is the 265 hp 5.8 EFI with an SX drive...

As HT mentioned, what model number do you have?

Does the fuel pump run when the key is turned on?
Have you checked the fuses (main power and fuel pump)?

I dont know what model number... Boat is in storage. I can go and see if i can find the model number. But i have no idea where to look?

The fuel pump does not come on when you turn on the key. Yes. all the fuses are good.

In most cases the model number is on the top of the motor somewhere, HT would be better to advise as where to look.

Does the motor crank over when the key is turned?

It's usually on the valve cover shift plate etc on top. If someone has replaced the engine (or valve covers etc) in the last 20+ years, all bets are off!

Here's a site that will help decode your model number when you find it. http://www.sterndrive.info/model_numbers.html

I am wondering if this could be a engine control module,
By the way, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but if it is the "module", they are no longer available. You might find one used.

I did a quick search and found one on craigslist in the southeast that the seller claimed to be new in a sealed box for about $450.
but I wouldn't waste my time(and money) trying to keep one of those going.

Your other only really viable "fix" if you do indeed have an ECM or other EFI problem might be to switch it to a "regular" distributor and a carburetor.

AND, If it is a 1994 drive it's likely an SX (Volvo) and they are completely supportable, and are excellent drives.

My plan would be to find a complete 5.7L GM engine, flywheel housing etc (complete engine with manifolds etc) and swap it out.

Your problem may be a simple and easy fix. If you do fix it, great! (You should still be looking for a complete 5.7L bobtail engine to swap out in the future when you do have EFI/ECM problems)

just saying!

I just want to fix it. it runs flawlessly when it starts. it will run 45-48 mph. i am going to probably sell it, and get a newer boat. not sure what these are worth? it is in good condition.

Therein lies the problem.

If the potential buyer does his homework, he's going to know that Ford power in an I/O application was abandoned by Mercruiser, OMC and Volvo 20+ years ago, OMC also went out of business nearly 20 years ago and many parts for that engine are either ridiculously expensive( from Volvo Penta) or not available.

The drive is a "plus" if it's an SX since they're completely available and all the parts and service are still available (albeit not for cheep)

If you just want to fix it, I would suggest that you get the OEM manual for that model. If the "problem" is not ECM or other (NLA) EFI parts etc (and it usually isn't) , it shouldn't be all that hard to get it running.

If you take it some place to get it fixed however, (if they'll even fix it at all) be prepared for a bit of "sticker" shock.

Putting a 5.7L (GM type) engine in it would not only make it a reliable package, it would make the boat worth more since the engine AND the drive would be completely supportable for a lot of years to come.

If you try to sell it in "not-running" condition, most people would consider it a boat with NO engine at all. (unless someone has a complete bobtail FOMOCO V-8 with all the fixin's sitting in their garage..........Sorry about that, I am just trying to give you all the options available)

Now, having said all that, You (armed with the OEM manual) may find something simple and obvious that will get it running for the summer. But if you do that, I would sell it in running condition (now) instead of waiting until the end of Summer!

Regards,

Rick
