I have a 1999 Volvo Penta 5.7 GSI. the last 2 years I have been hearing this high pitched noise coming from the top of the engine. I have been doing some research and I'm thinking the HP fuel pump is the issue. Any thoughts before I dive into removing it would be appreciated? I'm guessing the screen might be plugged up. This fuel pump system has separate high and low pressure pumps, low pressure one is near the fuel filter, high pressure one is near the top of the engine.

Common reason for pump to become noisy is air leak. Temporary replace the fuel line with a clear tube. There should be no or very little air bubbles. Also check the fuel filter, collars and make sure the 90 elbow and anti-siphon valve have tread sealant.

Another reason is lack of cooling by a restricted water flow, often at the exhaust manifold.

srgentpepr state the non water cooled pump and for some reason I was thinking the more common water cooled pump. My mistake. I apologize for the confusion. Of course if the pump is not water cooled ignore reason #2.

I have this same engine 5.7 Gsi with the same fuel pump setup. When I had purchased the boat four years ago it had bad fuel. Even after removing most of it, the high pressure pump screen would get clogged with sediment for months afterward and I would have to clean the screen frequently and the noise would go away. In fact that was the telltale sign I needed to clean it. Its been good now for years, but a quick way to clean it is to remove the stainless steel "plug" at the end of the pump and using an air hose with your typical blow nozzle, just give it a quick shot of air and that usually does the trick. Reinstall the plug and see if the sound goes away. This beats removing all the metal hoses on the pump and completely removing it.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Can you elaborate on the method used to clean it?

I used a q-tip then sprayed the screen with a decent amount of carb cleaner. Reinstalled plug, ran engine for 5 minutes, took the plug out and repeated the process again. I'll keep an eye on it over the next few weeks.
