1998 volvo penta 5.0gipbycce. I inherited this boat that has been sitting for over a decade. I have done multiple things preparing it for its maiden-to-me voyage which will hopefully happen this weekend. It's been about a year in the making.
Anyway, I was curious as to any advice on how I should run the boat to start. I was thinking of following the normal break in schedule for a new engine.
I'm also sure that the oil will need to be changed fairly soon after running for a bit. The oil looked brand new as it was changed 10 years ago and never run (winterized). I changed it anyway but I'm sure that there is some engine corrosion, rust and possibly gunk that will come free after running so when should I change the oil?
Lastly, I'm sure the modern oils have detergents to help clean therefore I am not planning on puting any additive in the oil. I was reading up on engine restoration and have seen people swearing by puting Marvel Mystery oil in the gas. Any opinions?
Thanks in advance.

I would pull the distributor and prime the oil system prior to firing it up. after 10 years, there will not be any oil film left on the bearings.

your motor was already broken in. nothing to be gained by following a break-in schedule anymore.

I had it running in the driveway already... I was more curious about taking it easy at the beginning.

Since you've already had it running, the only things I would do... replace the raw water pump impeller. Also keep a eye for oil leaks

Then change the impeller, and run it like you stole it and go boating.

Yes... been doing things to it for over a year... had to lift the motor to get the starter out. Then had to actually sawz all the stafter off... I'll spare the details. After lifting the motor I saw a small drip of oil which turned into a stream... hole in the oil pan. All better now. Changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, manifolds, risers, high pressure fuel pump, cleaned the vst, pipe doped the fuel lines, new thermostat and housing. New impeller, aligned motor, new bellows and water intake hose. Changed outdrive oil. Had injectors flowed and matched. Reseal kit for throttle body. New shift cable. Cleaned all electrical contacts and put in 2 new batteties. I think that about covers it! As you can see I've put a lot of work into it and learned TONS along the way. Just covering all my bases and crossing my t's and dotting my i's before I splash. If you say run it as hard as I want... no worries, then I shall. Thanks for the input!

I've wondered for years about that statement. Does it mean, 'Run the snot out of it'? Or, drive it like there was a cop beside you.

Myself I would be a perfect operator so not to attract the attention of Henry Handcuff
