Having a problem with my alternator overcharging the battery. Have had the alternator and battery both tested by a reputable shop. Does anyone know where I can locate a wiring diagram or schematic for my 2006 Bayliner 185 BR with a 4.3? I have tried the owners manuals from Bayliner but they only include the main harness routing and instrument cluster.

If the alternator checks ok then wiring cannot overcharge the battery. What makes you think the battery is being over charged? If the voltmeter on the dash (or a hand held voltmeter measuring voltage at the battery) indicate about 13.5 - 14.5 volts at 2000 rpm the battery is not being overcharged. It indicates things are perfectly normal.

Actually it can overcharge the battery, an alternator uses a sensor wire to detect the battery voltage separate from the main charging cable. If this wire is damaged or corroded it can have excessive voltage drop making the alternator boost its output. Both the in dash meter and my Fluke meter both indicate >15 volts when the engine is running. At 3,000 RPM I have 15.8 volts.
