Boat won't crank and stay running

Good afternoon. I had my 2000 Tahoe Tracker Q3 I/O in the water last week and it ran perfect the entire day. Went to go put it on the trailer and turned it off so I could go get the truck and it wouldn't cut back on. Did make sound when turned over but just won't stay cranked. Now tried it again this weekend and it did crank but engine was knocking extremely rough then cut off after about 20 seconds then after that would not crank again. Any suggestions? Could it possibly be choke issues? Just need an idea where to start. Thank you.

Howdy

Sorry to hear the issue. I would start with checking the oil in the motor and the drive. Make sure it is no over filled or to low.

When was the last maintenance done on the boat and what took place?

I don't want to know if you think it is full of oil because you just bought it, or because your sure someone else made sure it was done. The engine was knocking, which tells me the motor is damaged. It could be something as simple as the oil filter was not put on tight enough or the gasket had an issue.

We need so visual inspections to try and help. Please don't take anything for granted, take a look and let us know

Pull the plugs and spin the engine over to see if a geyser of water exits the spark plug holes!!!!! What do the plugs look like? Terms: Crank or cranking means the starter is spinning the engine. Run or running means the engine is actually running. Won't stay cranked means the starter won't stay engaged. Won't stay running means the engine starts but won't stay running. If you think it might be a choke issue -- check it. Cold engine the choke butterfly should be closed or nearly closed. Hot engine it should stand vertically. There are many types of knocks an engine in distress can make. Rod/main bearing knock = low down in engine block. Lifter noise: clatter in the valve train higher on engine. Loose pulley: rattling on the front of the engine. Those are just a few examples. What was the oil pressure reading when the knocking was going on. You have gauges -- pay attention to them when there is an issue (as well as when there isn't).

Hi everyone i am new tot his site but i have a question.. I would like to know if anyone could help me with my motor wiring. I have a 1978 35 hp evinrude outboard with electric start and i can not figure out why the ignition will not work now. When i first got it it would just click on the solinoid when you turned the key and it would blow fuses and so we switched the solinoid and re wired the fuse set up because the wiring was really brittal and falling apart but we didnt do it the same way it was we wired it a little different and i am wanting to know what the order for the ignition wiring is and also if someone know if i have to put the fuse system back the way it was or if it could be something else since now turning the ignition does nothing now but blow fuses but if you cross jump the solinoid the motor will start. Thank you in advance.

Start your own topic Jeff in the evinrud/Johnson boards.
