So I bought a boat that was sitting for 5 plus years. Twin Merc 1998 150 XL OS 2 strokes. I was told both had a rebuild with new power heads about 7 years ago (then sat for 5 years), one has 80 hrs and one has 67 hours since rebuild (per timers on instrument panel). Did a spring/100hr tune up, both engines started up right away and sounded great. Took her for a test run. I heard an emergency beeping coming from the instrument panel. The fuel tank meter was not working (registered empty after I had filled the tank), so I thought it was possibly a low fuel warning. Both tell-tales were spitting well, I took a laser thermometer to each head and they seemed to be within the normal range (110-130 degrees). To my knowledge, the t-stats open at 140 so I thought it was even a little low. Still heard emergency beeping. Took the engines to about 2800-3000 rpms for several minutes, in gear. Temp on the starboard motor heads was now about 150, port was still around 110. Put her in gear again, got on a plane and all of a sudden the Starboard engine died.
Now the flywheel won't turn. If I take an 8" ratchet with a socket it will only turn about 10 degrees. Didn't want to force it with a larger ratchet or breaker bar...
I am worried and prepared for the worst. Rebuild? Could the emergency beeping have been an oil pressure or oil pump malfunction and I ran it without the engine getting oil? Any info or feedback is appreciated. This is what I did previous to starting the engines up:
-Changed fuel/water separators
-Changed in-line fuel filters
-Pumped out old gas out of tank, replaced with ethanol-free and added quicksilver quickcleen
-Changed all spark plugs
-New water pump and impellers
-New T-stats
-Changed gear oil
-Took off props and thrust hubs, cleaned, greased and replaced.
-Lubed all points recommended in service manual for spring tune up
Ideas anyone? FYI I am not a professional mechanic, I have just followed the service manual for everything I have done. Am I about to fork over a few thousand...?
