Finally got the outdrive all sealed up, Replaced Gimbal Bearing, Aligned Engine. Launched the boat today.

When Trim is above 75% up and when steering left or right over 60% it sounds like there's small rocks in the outdrive.

U Joint?

How difficult and expensive is this?

Thanks, as always, to all of you.

Sounds like it could be unis. Did you check them when the drive was off?

Replacing is simple. Pull the drive, then use a hammer and socket or a press and socket and push the unis apart. You'll read plenty of places say you need to disassemble the bearing pack to get the uni closest to the bearings out. Rubbish. Done a lot of them and never needed to disassemble anything else. Just turn the yoke so the uni bearing cup drives out between the tags of the drive front cover.

I can't answer the U joint question, however, I would recommend NOT running the drive at 75% up, that's a good way to ruin said u joints :(

If you are running the drive at that extreme of an angle and then turning it, you could be creating some problems.....If you've been running the drive like this for awhile, it might be a good time to service them. I'd love to see more on how to service/replace them. Not something I've attempted and hopefully won't have to, but I'd love to see it!

Nope, Don't run it that angle, Well much anyway, Just for getting it off the boat ramp once it's floating and a small part of the channel out to the lake where the depth is about 2.5 - 3 feet. Noticed it then. Never run it above where the limit switch is set. THen noticed again while turning.

Anything above 22 inches of cylinder travel strains the U joints, and anything power above idle can be hazardous to the drive.

If you hear u-joints while turning with the drive down, replace them. You need a press, a little patience and new u-joints. There is a list in the DIY Stickies of alternative part numbers you can use to purchase them at your local automotive parts store.
