So I have heard a lot about the "legendary" V5 hulls, but I don't really know much about them.
  • What makes a V5 and V5 ?
  • What years were they built ?
  • What models got V5 hulls ?

V5 hulls wer built from approximately 1977-79 in the SS, Holiday , offshore and Islander models. They had thicker aluminum hulls. Deeper. And wider with a much sharper bow angle. They also had an extra chin strip running up almost to the bow eye. If you compare Wtermans V5 to regular Ss you can really see the difference.

In addition to what Glen said, the V5 had modifications as well to the stringers, ribs and has a double knee brace that also rivets into the splashwell. It also for those few years veared away from the lap sides which SC went back to for most of the 80's until they adopted the newer V5 style hulls in the 90's on.

Here's a couple pics of other SS V5's. and the regular SS.

Exact same year both are 1979's but this SS isn't the V5 it's the starndard SS with lap sides and is missing the double spray rail. Also the V5 has a fuel filler on the port side and a curved glass windshield.

Regular SS.

I didn't think they made the V5 until 1978, and they made them with the 5 V's well into the 80's...... then at some point the shortened the 2 extra V's that ran all the way to the bow and they dropped the V5 moniker...but some of the extra features are probably there, like the beam being wider... and the stringers being taller and laid out different. The splash well on the V5 is totally different than the regular hulls in the 22 ft version... they actually have a hinged door on the inside portion of the splashwell....that folds in....since I have a 22ft version I know more about that model than I do the 14ft and 18 ft versions...I don't think the 18 ft V5 had a fold down splashwell door... and I don't know that they were any WIDER in the beam than the regular 18 ft version...but the 22 ft V5 was WIDER in the beam than the non V5 hull... ( I think they only went with 21 ft versions of the non V5 hulls in the years they made V5 hulls....ie in the early 70s I have heard of 22 ft holidays....

the stringer height is MUCH taller on my 22ft V5 than my 1970 21 ft Islander.......

In retrospect I think the hulls didn't change much, but the early 80's just called the models "V", if it had the V5 hull config. because the 1983 brochure clearly shows an islander with the extra chines all the way to the bow!!

Bob I don't enjoy contradicting people but take a look at the NADA listing for Starcraft boats in 1979 http://www.nadaguides.com/Boats/1979/Starcraft-Co

You will see the V5 model listed and it's specs for only the 1978 and 1979 model years. Then drop down the year box and select 1980, there will be NO V5 models listed after 1979, only 1978 and 1979. If you do a search for V5 starcraft boats you will only find those 2 years. You'll notice that Starcraft also dropped many of their models starting in 1980 compared to their hay day in the 1970's.

yeah I figured that and I reposted that the "term" V5 was dropped but the hulls look the same at least through 1983..... they just called them "v"...so they offer a 220, and a 220 V...the "V" version had the 5 chines and wider beams, and deeper hulls....ala V5 from 78 and 79.

So with a deeper vee these are basically big water hulls but with the deeper vee it will take more power than the shallower vee of the std design.

id have to go back and look at the pictures of my hulls(1983 180SS, 1970 21 ft Islander, and 1979-1980 ish 22 ft Holiday V5) but I am not sure the deadrise is that much different......I think the cutwater might be deeper....... the 22ft V5 was rated to 240 HP!!!!

There is a substantial dead rise on these boat hulls and yes it takes more HP but I believe my 18' SS V5 is rated at 140 HP.

Watermann, I agree with you that this hull type was only called the "V5" for its first two years of production but I agree with Bob that it carried on well after that with their many V models. If you refer to the 1980 Starcraft brochure in this forum (page 11) it states,"you can select V5 hull performance on the Super Sport V 180 OB..." . Thus carrying this wonderful V5 lineage well into 80's in many of their V models.

I hope I'm not the only one who can't read a word of that brochure pic.

Yeah there's no disputing the fact that SC carried on the V5 hull styling with some modifications in later models from the originals in 78 & 79.
