I am replacing the starter on my '05 3.0L Mercruiser. The bolt kit that came with the new starter has a foam casket with it. The old starter that came off had nothing like this attached anywhere on the starter. First off, do I need to put this on the new starter and secondly where does it go and how is it oriented?

Just for clarift, you have never use the new foam gaskets? Or you have never seen the bolt kit come with the gasket? I am thoroughly confused as to its purpose.

Ayuh,...... The "Theory" is to seal the flywheel cover, which has a huge hole in it anyways,....

Personally, I don't want the flywheel cover sealed,.... Let the darn water drain out, if for whatever reason it get's in there,.....

I wondered what the logic behind those foam gaskets was.

Thanks so much for the reply. I will just toss it out. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't for spacing or anything that would cause some bolt breakage of it didn't align right. Hopfully the front bracket will come tomorrow and I can get all the new parts in. Thanks again!
